Both above answers are correct, always try to use a moisture resistant board i.e plasterboard but if this isnt possible now then use SBR not PVA before tiling and make sure to use the correct adhesive for a shower enclosure. Combined with liquid tanking will provide very good water resistant surface. However this is cheeper alternative to cement boards like AQUAPANEL.

I would certainly use tanking matting in all corners and edges. Use the recommended tanking primer, then at least 2 coats of tanking applied with brushstrokes at right angles to each other. Prepare walls for tiling. Fit shower tray & connect up waste. Tank tiled area (our starting point in this article) Tile & grout. Silicon seal where required.

Frankly its easiest just to tank the whole area around the shower up to about 1½m above where the feet are stood when showering.
