For automatic transmissions, it engages on an 8% slope; for manual, at 3%. Kudos, Jeep engineers, on the effort. I think it will help me teach the woman of the house to drive stick.

WebJun 12, 2008 · On a flat surface, the hill-assist shouldn't be initiated at all. It doesn't work by triggering your engine (while in 1st gear) to idle faster and push you forward. The way that it knows it is on a hill is because it has a gyro (or accelerometer) placed somewhere in the car so that it knows what the angle of your car is with respect to level ground.

With the clutch in and I remove my foot from the brake pedal, the car doesn't begin to roll backwards until after a few seconds. After that, the car rolls back.
